OPPORTUNITIES - Daniel C. Dennett
What is an opportunity? Are the opportunities we seem to have merely apparent opportunities if determinism is true? Would real opportunitities be possible if determinism were false? What would a real opportunity be?
An opportunity is supposed to be a 'chance' for an agent to 'do something' that will 'make a difference.' In America you 'take your turn'; in England you 'have to go.'
Are these chances we all want to have real
chance chances, occasions on which determinism is suspended (if it ever is in force), or could there be opportunities in a perfectly determined world containing perfectly determined deliberators?
[What do you think, kiddos? Chris I'm looking at you, biotch!]
